Weather Synopsis

3:52 PM: Adjusted Sunday's snow water equivalent numbers.

Moist WNW flow continues to transition the Pacific Northwest into an active weather pattern. Increasing light rain and snow continue to focus on the central and northern Washington Cascades Saturday night. Expect moderate accumulations in the westernmost part of the range as W winds deposit moisture from low cloud and moderate winds accelerate over the Cascade Crest and down the east slopes of the Cascades.

A cold trough slides down the British Columbia coastline, approaching the Pacific Northwest on Sunday. Moderate to strong W and WSW ridgeline winds accompany moderate to heavy rain and snow. The heavier precipitation might bring a subtle drop in snow levels with cooling during the day at 5000 ft and above, but not at pass levels. The surface cold front pushes through from NW to SE Sunday evening shifting the heaviest precipitation through the central and southern Cascades. Moderate to heavy snow showers transition to light to moderate snow showers as temperatures plummet behind the front. Snow levels will be below 1500 ft in all areas by Monday morning as a cold trough continues to spin light to moderate snow showers and convergence bands into the area. Expect 1-2" of snow water equivalent for the west slopes of the Cascades through 4 PM on Sunday, with 5-15" of snow above the 3500-4000 ft rain/snow line. An additional 1-1.5" is likely for the west slopes of the central and southern Washington Cascades. Sunday night through Monday with another 10-15" of snow, including at lower elevations.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Very light snow showers continue as NW flow aloft develops on the back side of the cold trough Monday night through Tuesday. Temperatures remain well below seasonal norms. A deep Gulf of Alaska low sends a frontal system towards our area, with a warm front approaching Tuesday night and arriving Wednesday. Expect a warmup to 2000-4000 ft snow levels for the west slopes of the Cascades, but E flow should insulate the passes.

Previous forecast from Feb 24, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
