A weak ridge will be responsible for fair weather Thursday night through Friday. Isolated showers taper in the early evening hours over the Olympics and Mt Baker areas. Partly cloudy skies in most areas rapidly dissipate as daytime heating wears off. Temperatures remain mild in the evening, but cool overnight, thanks to clear skies and light winds. Very light E winds should help the passes drop below freezing.
The ridge and mostly sunny skies combine to enable rapidly rising freezing levels on Friday. Freezing levels start the day in the 2500-4500 ft range and climb up to 5500-7000 ft. The warmest temperatures will be in the southern Cascades. The ridge begins to flatten in the afternoon, allowing WNW flow to start and clouds increase across the northern portion of the forecast region in the afternoon. Exposed ridgelines east of the Crest should expect some moderate winds in the afternoon.
West winds ramp up further Friday night as a system approaches, bringing light rain and snow from highway 2 northward in the early morning hours. Snow levels should be around 3000 ft.
On Saturday, light snow expands in coverage from Snoqualmie Pass northward but may extend as far south as Paradise. Don't expect much spillover east of the Cascade Crest. Expect moderate to strong W ridgeline winds for the mountain gaps and exposed ridgelines along the E slopes of the Cascades. Snow levels fluctuate from 3000-3500 ft.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Saturday night, the light rain and snow gradually increase extending throughout the west slopes of the Washington Cascades. Heavy rain and snow develop from north to south on Sunday as a cold front approaches. Expect winds and rain/snow to peak early Sunday evening with a sharp frontal passage. Snow levels should be slightly above Snoqualmie Pass elevation until the front passes, but expect snow levels to plummet as temperatures drop Sunday night with light to moderate snow showers and convergence continuing behind the front. Light snow showers continue on Monday with snow levels just above sea level. Expect 1-2 ft of snow for the Cascades (above 3500 ft) from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
