Our cool and snowy pattern continues over the short term. A cold upper level trough has set up shop over the PNW. A new weather disturbance sliding down the backside of the trough tonight will enhance orographic snowfall on Thursday over the west slopes of the Cascades, particularly from the near and south Hwy 2, with the heaviest showers reserved for the West South zone and Mt Hood. WNW winds will also begin to crank on Thursday and become strong for the same areas with the heavier showers. An atypical take on convergence bands may form as Fraser River Valley outflow winds (N-NE) drive south through the Puget Sound and link up with onshore flow. This could cause localized higher snowfall totals anywhere these bands form Thursday. Temperatures are likely to drop for the north Cascades including the Mt Baker area and Washington Pass during the day as modified arctic air pushes into the region.
The southward march of cold temperatures will continue into Friday with 5000' temperatures daytime highs near zero in the north and single digits/lower teens for the central and south WA Cascades. Offshore flow and easterly winds will start to crank through the Passes, creating the potential for dangerously low wind chill values. There will likely be light upslope snow along the east slopes of the Cascades during this period.
If that wasn't enough, a developing offshore storm will pass inland on Friday. Forecast models are closing in on a consensus but still, there's a fair amount of uncertainty with the storm track. The south WA Cascades and especially Mt Hood are the most likely to receive significant additional snowfall.
Remember as the temperature drops, so does the snow density. Even some of these lighter precipitation numbers can produce modest snowfall amounts.

Extended Weather Synopsis
There's even more uncertainity on Saturday. Another storm system may impact the south WA Cascades and Mt Hood area during the daylight hours on Saturday or may stay even further south. An upper level ridge of high pressure will start to build offshore on Sunday, leading to a drying trend for the remainder of the holiday weekend. Temperatures will moderate over the latter half of the weekend as well, although there's also quite the spread to how quickly this happens.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
