Weather Synopsis

A very active weather pattern will impact the Pacific Northwest over the next 3-4 days.

A weakening trough brought light bands of snowfall as it passed over the area on Sunday afternoon along with a trace to a few inches of snow.  After a brief warm-up for the west slopes of the Cascades during the morning hours, cooler temperatures returned later in the day. Some flurries and extensive cloud cover linger over the area Sunday evening.

A ridge over the Rockies directs the storm track northward into British Columbia, allowing an atmospheric river Monday through early Tuesday to bring warm air into areas west of the Cascade Crest, while a strong cold air pool battles for precipitation type near the Cascade Crest. The warm front approaches from the southwest late Sunday night, spreading light snowfall into the Mt Hood and Olympics areas in the early morning hours.

Increasing light to moderate precipitation spreads from SW to NE across the region Monday morning. Southerly winds ahead of the system ramp up during the day, with moderate to locally strong winds impacting the Olympics and Mt Baker. Easterly flow also peaks Monday morning, bringing moderate to locally strong and cold east flow through the mountain gaps. As snow levels rise in areas further from the Cascade Crest, the passes likely remain all snow or freezing rain mix with moderate precipitation continuing to stream on Monday night.

A frontal passage in the early morning hours on Tuesday may result in a brief period of W flow with lighter rain and snow shower activity behind the front. Expect a changeover to rain at Snoqualmie Pass level. E flow returns Tuesday afternoon with the potential to lower snow levels to Snoqualmie Pass elevation.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Tuesday night brings a relative break in the action with continued moderate southerly winds and E winds increasing once again. Light to moderate pulses of rain and snow arrive through Wednesday night with the E slopes and passes remaining mostly frozen precipitation. Another system offshore winds up with precipitation mostly impacting the Olympics and Baker areas on Thursday.

Previous forecast from Dec 24, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
