Update: Lowered Olympics wind forecast for this evening.
A front pushed through the Cascades mid to late Friday morning causing a burst of heavier precipitation and ushering in colder air that lowered snow levels below many mountain trailheads. Light to moderate snow showers have filled in behind the front along with blustery W-NW winds in most locations. A Puget Sound Convergence zone (PSCZ) is hard to distinguish on the current radar but should become more apparent later this afternoon and evening. Snoqualmie Pass will likely be the benefactor of slightly heavier snowfall totals if the PSCZ lines up over I-90 as predicted.
Scattered showers including the PSCZ will wane overnight as well as strong WNW ridgeline winds. An upper level ridge of high pressure will quickly move over the area tomorrow, leading to a dry and mostly benign weather day. There should be some low clouds trapped near and west of the Cascade crest that are unlikely to completely clear out Saturday afternoon. Most other areas will see partly to mostly sunny skies with freezing levels reaching up to 3000-3500' along with light and variable winds.
On Saturday night, offshore flow will increase and we'll see E-SE winds near and west of the Cascade crest ramp up in response. A weak frontal band should reach the coast by sunset, and may spread some light rain or snow into the Olympics. Besides locally windy conditions, we should see a fair amount of cloud cover from the incoming system to close out the weekend.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Sunday night's frontal system will largely fizzle, bringing some light wintry precipitation to the area. If you were looking for a big snowstorm to unwrap on Christmas...that doesn't look to be in the cards this year. A stronger Pacific frontal system offshore will glance the Olympics on Christmas Day but the bullseye of heavier precipitation likely headed north into Vancouver Island. That may not be the worst scenario since we're on the warm side of the jet stream.
As the deep low pressure curls northward Monday night, it now looks likely the front will become more north-south oriented and stretch as it pushes inland Monday night and Tuesday. There should be strong cool easterly flow during the precipitation which will help keep snow levels in the Passes low at least initially. Areas further west of the crest should see somewhat higher snow levels in this pattern.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
