The multi-day conveyor belt of moisture that's pummelled the PNW and knocked back our early-season snowpack with rain and mild temperatures is finally coming to an end. A frontal boundary that has become north-south oriented continues to slowly slide to the east, producing light to locally moderate precipitation along both sides of the central and south Cascades and the Mt Hood area. This pattern will continue through the evening with precipitation becoming lighter later tonight. Light snow has reappeared at upper elevations, and we can expect snow levels to gradually cool even further to around 3500'-4000' by Thursday morning.
A weak surface low will pass south of the Olympic Peninsula on Thursday, introducing a new shot of light rain/snow focused on the central and south Washington Cascades. As the trailing upper trough passes into eastern WA Thursday afternoon, look for an increase in shower intensity along the west slopes of the Cascades and Mt Hood. Several inches of snow could accumulate above 4000' for these areas although there's a fair amount of uncertainty associated with the precipitation forecast. We should also see a burst of westerly winds from about Hwy2 and south to Mt Hood on Thursday afternoon.
We'll see showers wind down Thursday night before giving way to a dry Friday. Continued onshore westerly flow and an upper-level ridge offshore will help trap low-level moisture west of the Cascade crest on Friday with sunnier skies likely near and east of the crest.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A strong frontal system will impact the region over the weekend although many details are up in the air. This storm has the potential to deliver 1-2+' of snow to our mountains. However after a cool start on Saturday, snow levels look to rise Saturday night through Sunday, and there's a good chance snow will switch to rain at lower and possibly even mid-elevations for the latter half of the weekend.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
