Weather Synopsis

A deep low-pressure center spinning in the Gulf of Alaska guides a firehose of moisture at our region over the next 2 and half days.

Sunday night will be the one opportunity to dry off and cool down slightly as post-frontal rain and snow shower activity taper on decreasing moderate W flow. Snow levels drop to around Snoqualmie Pass level overnight.

The major story will be another moisture-laden warm front lifting NNE across the region Monday morning. Most areas will experience a relatively swift transition to rain as snow levels rise 1000-3500 ft from the morning to the afternoon. A weak cold air pool combined with E flow will try to stave off the changeover to rain at the mountain passes, but expect only a few hours of snow before the changeover to rain at most mountain passes. However, Washington Pass likely remains all snow until Monday night.

The region remains in the warm sector of the storm with continued moderate SSW flow feeding plenty of moisture into the region Monday night. Heavy rain and very high-elevation snow intensify from NW to SE as the cold front approaches the coastline.

The cold front drifts through the region on Tuesday with the heaviest precipitation shifting into the central and southern Cascades by the afternoon. Expect lighter shower activity across NW Washington during the afternoon as snow levels descend to the tops of ski areas such as Mt Baker.

Precipitation amounts range from 2-7" through Tuesday afternoon for areas near and west of the Cascade Crest with 1-3" totals east of the Crest.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The lingering cold front continues to feed more modest and decreasing amounts of moisture into the southern Cascade Volcanoes Tuesday night and Wednesday as the front sags south. A trough moves into the region in its wake Wednesday night and Thursday with a gradual transition from rain to snow as snow levels lower across the region.

Previous forecast from Dec 3, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
