Following a cold and snowy period, the active weather patterns turns up the moisture dial and the temperatures as well: we're bracing for two atmospheric river events.
Saturday evening light snow showers continue to taper in post-frontal westerly flow as slightly cooler air settles in.
An approaching warm front begins to lift northward in the early morning hours. Warming and steady precipitation start first at Mt Hood with increasing rain and snow as snow levels rise. By morning, expect snow levels there to be above 7000 ft. While the heaviest precipitation will focus on Mt Hood on Sunday (where 24-hour precipitation totals could be in the 3-3.5" range), the southern Washington Cascades will also receive 1-2" of precipitation as snow changes to rain at most low and mid elevations from south to north as the day progresses. This transition will be particularly messy at the Cascade Passes where low-level E flow in the morning could create freezing rain or sleet in the mid-morning hours as the warm air over-runs it. By late in the day, W winds will overwhelm the cold air pool in most areas, except perhaps Washington Pass where there is a 50/50 chance precipitation stays all snow.
A cold front pushing through Sunday afternoon brings slightly cooler conditions, with light rain and snow showers along the west slopes of the Cascades Sunday night.
The second atmospheric river approaches on Monday with more rain and further increases in snow levels along with E winds. This time, the cold pool east of the Cascades will be very week and not particularly relevant.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The majority of the second atmospheric river arrives Monday night warm front pushing snow levels up to around 9000 ft. The heaviest precipitation arrives late Monday night and early Tuesday before a cold front eases southward Tuesday afternoon. The cold front and associated moisture linger on Tuesday night over Mt Hood with cooling temperatures bringing chances for snowfall once again by Wednesday.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
