Weather Synopsis
Welcome to the 2023-24 NWAC Forecasting Season! Mountain weather forecasts will be issued daily at 2 pm and general avalanche information statements published Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6 pm until we begin full forecasting operations.
What a beautiful day to kick off the winter season! The Pacific Northwest finds itself nestled between a storm in the Gulf of Alaska and a cut-off low-pressure system off the coast of California. This leaves us with mostly clear skies, light to moderate winds, and crisp fall-like temperatures. While we aren't expecting a big storm over the next few days, the weather will get a bit messy.
A passing short-wave system to our north and a lifting frontal boundary to our south will both spread clouds into the region Tuesday night. Each system will usher a few light showers over the area late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Even though snow levels are rather low, this shouldn't produce much new snow. Basically, if you're further north or further south, you're more likely to get wet. If you're in the middle, you might just stay dry.
By late Wednesday, sun breaks should return to the mountains as the storms exit and we begin clearing up. Without the warm cloud blanket, temperatures will dip significantly Wednesday night. Combine the clear skies, cool temperatures, and lingering moisture and you could encounter patchy fog and low clouds in the mountain valleys and passes. Cool northerly flow will start to shift more westerly Thursday afternoon. While temperatures will remain a bit chilly, freezing levels should start to climb as a building high-pressure ridge takes control of our weather.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A high-pressure ridge takes hold of the region Thursday afternoon/evening. This could develop several inversion layers and create numerous freezing levels. In general, expect much warmer air to override the Northwest, pushing first into western Washington overnight, before fully overrunning the Cascades Friday. Mostly clear skies will once again allow surface temperatures to cool dramatically Friday night. As a result, you may encounter patch fog, but it should generally be confined to areas near rivers and lakes. A significant winter storm starts to approach the region on Saturday. Increasing clouds and strengthening winds should arrive by the afternoon. However, at this point, precipitation seems to hold off until after sunset.
