A modest frontal system resides off the Pacific Northwest Coastline on Saturday. Generally light SSW winds displaced colder air throughout the day, particularly at mid and upper elevations. This has resulted in a more stable atmosphere with a mix of stratiform low-level and mid-level clouds creating a cloudy day on Saturday. The frontal system makes its way onshore Saturday night. Light rain and high-elevation snow showers initially focus more on the Olympics during the evening hours, spreading into the west slopes of the northern Cascades later in the evening, and then into the southern Cascades and east slopes overnight. The narrow band of steadier frontal precipitation brings a period of moderate rain and snow first to the Olympics and Mt Baker areas overnight, then the rest of the Cascades Sunday morning as snow levels rise to 6000-7000 ft ahead of a late morning cold frontal passage. Mt Baker will be favored by the flow pattern and could pick up around 1" of water equivalent through Sunday afternoon, with other areas receiving less than half an inch. Snow levels fall by 1000 ft or more as precipitation becomes showery behind the front in the afternoon. An upper low lingering offshore maintains SW flow continues across the region, so don't expect much of a wind shift except from light E to light W winds through the mountain gaps. Moderate ridgeline winds remain most of the day for the Mt Baker area, but expect mostly light winds in areas less exposed to this flow direction.
Light rain and snow showers continue Sunday evening, primarily for the west slopes of the Cascades. Light rain and snow becomes steadier overnight as the offshore low makes landfall over north-central Washington State. The steady rain and snow gradually decrease and transition to isolated showers as the low shifts east of the region by late morning on Monday. Expect around 1-4" of snow for mid and upper elevations with the upper low as snow levels drop to 3000 ft by early Monday morning, rising up to 3500-4000 ft in the afternoon.

Extended Weather Synopsis
An offshore ridge amplifies Monday night through Wednesday, bringing increasingly sunny skies and milder temperatures. By Tuesday night and Wednesday, freezing levels will approach 10,000 ft in the Mt Hood area. Weak systems round the top of the ridge and we'll monitor the potential for increased cloud cover near the Canadian border.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
