A cold trough has taken up residence off our coast and will spin showers into the region on a general Southwesterly flow. Snow levels have dropped down to 2,000ft, and most mountain locations have picked up a couple to several inches of new snow in the past 24 hours. The unseasonably cool and snowy pattern should continue for the next 24 hours. Winds should be a notch slower, and the amount of snow and rain that falls could also be a notch lower, but for the most part what you see now is what you'll get on Wednesday.
With very cold upper air temperatures, afternoon instability should fuel another round of convective showers that develop over the crest and many will carry over to the eastern slopes. Some of these could be strong, with brief periods of heavier snow, graupel, and even a chance of lightning. By the end of the day most areas should have another few inches of snow, and the volcanoes in the southern half and the Olympics could pick up several new inches.
Wednesday night we'll see a drying trend with cold temperatures. Low clouds should stick around on the western slopes, while skies on the eastern slopes clear out. The break in precipitation will be relatively short-lived, but Thursday is the day to enjoy it. A strong warm front approaches, and could bring precipitation to the west coast of the PNW by as early as Thursday afternoon for areas like the Olympics and Baker. For the most part though, it'll be a drier day and we can expect a range of clear to partly cloudy skies in the morning with increasingly cloudy skies later.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Thursday night the temperatures should continue to climb as a warm front pushes into the region. Expect a stormy day on Friday as precipitation spreads over the entire region by early morning, snow levels climb, and ridgetop winds ramp up into the moderate and strong range for many areas. It's safe to say we'll see a bump in avalanche danger along with this storm.
It's too early to tell how Saturday will pan out, but most models are showing that precipitation could continue during the day, and snow levels will continue to climb into the 6,000-7,000ft range by afternoon.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
