A cold trough lingering over the region since Tuesday slides eastward. An embedded surface low-pressure center over northern Oregon on Wednesday afternoon will continue to bring periods of light snow or snow showers into the evening hours before it exits with the upper trough. Expect additional snowfall amounts of up to 2" of snow for the Mt Hood area. A few scattered snow showers over the north Cascades near Washington Pass could also bring a dusting to an inch of snow to that region. Expect a period of moderate W winds through the mountain gaps in the early evening hours before the pressure gradient across the mountains eases. Skies clear across the region overnight with mostly light NNW winds as a subtle shortwave ridge moves in. Patchy low stratus may get trapped against the west slopes of the Cascades as atmospheric stability increases.
A shortwave trough quickly replaces the subtle ridge on Thursday with increased chances for scattered snow showers near and west of the Cascade Crest. Some high-resolution models indicate a moderate convergence band aimed for Mt Baker. Expect the possibility of several hours of high snowfall rates and 2-5" of snow/graupel late in the day.
The trough axis moves east of the area in the evening, allowing lingering light snow showers to wind down and skies to partially clear overnight. Friday looks like a pleasant day with partly cloudy skies and ridging somewhat limiting afternoon cloud buildup.
Snow levels remain below the major passes through Thursday evening, but expect a gradual warming trend through Friday.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The warming trend continues through the weekend. A Gulf of Alaska low-pressure center remains relatively stationary, allowing SW-NE oriented frontal boundaries to linger in our near-shore waters. Mostly light rain and increasingly higher elevation snow will brush the Olympics and Mt Baker areas. Models suggest that light to moderate precipitation may spread throughout the region Sunday afternoon. Moderate SSW ridgeline winds develop for exposed areas along the west slopes of the Cascades on Saturday, likely ramping up into the strong range for similar areas on Sunday.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
