Weather Synopsis

Light to moderate showers will continue through early this evening, heaviest near the West slopes of the Cascades and especially down at Mt. Hood and Olympics and much lighter further east of the Cascade crest. We'll see a switch in the pattern from post-frontal westerlies to light offshore or easterly flow overnight. A modified arctic front will affect the east slopes of the Cascades and the north slopes of the Olympics with an inch or two of low-density snow. The Wentachees including Mission Ridge may be able to squeeze out 2-4 inches overnight. Breezy conditions will develop overnight for the northwest Cascades closest to the Fraser River Valley where outflow (NE) winds will increase overnight into the moderate range. The caveat to this changing pattern will be Mt Hood area where showers in westerly flow will continue through early Wednesday morning.

Unseasonably cold temperatures for late February will be a constant beginning tonight through the end of the work week. On Wednesday, a broad and very cold upper low will be set up over the western US with a weak surface circulation off of the mouth of the Columbia River. This will once again cause light snow showers over the Olympic Peninsula and near west of Mt Rainier and Mt. Hood. More scattered light snow showers will be found elsewhere. Light upslope snows along the east side of the Cascades won't add much new snow but will keep skies cloudy. This pattern will continue Wednesday night but we can expect E-SE winds to increase into the moderate range for many locations.

On Thursday, the low will dig off the OR/CA coast and bring most showers to an end.  However, skies are likely to remain partly to mostly cloudy with very light snow showers most likely along the east slopes of the Cascades. Temperatures will be very cold for our neck of the woods, with single digits and teens common through this period while moderate to locally strong E-SE winds continue.

Previous forecast from Feb 21, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
