Weather Synopsis

WNW flow continues to deliver light to occasionally moderate rain and snow and strong West winds to our mountains today, with the higher precipitation rates favoring areas near and west of the Cascade crest, particularly north of I-90. This pattern has seen little change since Sunday, but it will finally start to evolve late this afternoon and Monday night as a cold front sweeps down from the NW.

Precipitation rates will begin to increase later this afternoon, becoming heavy in many areas through the frontal passage this evening. Snow levels, which have bumped around 3500-5500' across the region, will stay steady or increase slightly through this time period as well. Following the frontal passage, we can expect significant post-frontal showers in westerly flow as snow levels drop to around 2000' by sunrise Tuesday morning. Westerly ridgeline winds were already strong, and should become extreme overnight for a wide swath of the region. This is not an event to be caught out in the alpine or an exposed location tonight. There may be some convergence banding with the post-frontal snow showers, but the prevalence of showers up and down the Cascades with significant spillover due to the strong W winds along the east slope of the Cascades means everyone will see accumulating snow.

An unseasonably cold upper trough will dig over the area on Tuesday, keeping convective snow showers at low snow levels going throughout the day.  Westerly winds should finally begin to back off in the afternoon, although they will linger longer down near Mt Hood.

The pattern will change once again Tuesday night. Very cold air from the interior will come out the Fraser Valley and through the Cascades Passes with cold easterly flow.  We can expect light snow showers, with some light upslope enhancement along the east slopes of the Cascades and the north slopes of the Olympics in this pattern.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Cold temperatures and E-SE winds will continue Wednesday night and begin to decrease Thursday as the upper trough begins to split off from the main upper level flow.  Thursday and Friday look to be cold and mainly dry (few flurries possible) days with variable cloud cover.

Previous forecast from Feb 20, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
