It's a pleasant day to be outside with mountain temps in the mid 20s to mid 30s under mostly sunny skies and a few high clouds floating down from the north. That will begin to change overnight as a fast moving Pacific frontal system approaches the coast. The arrival of this system seems to have been pushed back by a few hours. Even with relatively mild temperatures continuing Friday night and into the morning hours, snow levels will quickly fall to 2000-3000' with the onset of precipitation.
The front will pass through the Olympics and north Cascades before noon, and the south Cascades and Mt Hood in the early afternoon. Prior to the frontal passage, the south slopes of the Olympics and the Mt Baker area will see the strongest southerly winds. After the frontal passage, strong westerly ridgeline winds will be commonplace in all except the northern Cascades. Strong to extreme westerly winds will continue Saturday night for the same areas. Post-frontal snow showers should continue to add a few more inches Saturday night, especially along the west slopes of the Cascades, but forecast guidance is continuing to show a range of solutions regarding where and how long a Puget Sound Convergence zone might linger overnight.
Sunday will be a cold day with diminishing winds and showers. The east slopes of the Cascades should see some sun while the west slopes will likely see sunbreaks but not a full clearing in the afternoon.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A ridge of high pressure will begin to set up offshore. However, storm systems on a northerly track and steering into British Columbia will flatten the ridge enough to let periods of light precipitation and cloud cover into the northern portion of Washington State. There will also be a N-S temperature gradient in this pattern with milder temperatures and more sunshine to the south. We could be in for a dry stretch after Tuesday if the ridge rebuilds along our coast.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
