Weather Synopsis

A cool mid-January afternoon featuring a mix of low and high clouds over the area will continue overnight as a ridge of high pressure builds offshore. Occasional high clouds will continue to stream over the area in NW flow aloft while low level moisture/clouds, particularly near and west of the Cascade crest should largely slosh around but stay with us. Also noteworthy, breezy NW winds will continue along ridgelines and in the alpine tonight for the Washington Cascades.

With upper level ridging building overhead on Friday, we're in for a dry day. Low clouds near and west of the Cascade crest in the morning should largely mix out as we head towards mid-day and mostly sunny skies. Freezing levels will bump up a notch vs Thursday, generally settling in the 3500-4500' across the region.

We'll see increasing high clouds Friday night as an approaching Pacific frontal system nears the coast. The frontal system will be a quick mover, with a burst of moderate snowfall for the Olympics/north Cascades in the morning and south Cascades/Mt Hood area in the early afternoon as the front sweeps through. Winds will ramp up quickly with this system as well, expect locally strong S-SW winds to become widespread strong Westerlies by the end of the day Saturday. Total snowfall amounts don't seem to impressive yet, but we'll wait for a few more model runs to get a better handle on storm amounts.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Falling snow levels, post frontal showers and moderate/strong W-NW winds will continue Saturday night will add additional snow, especially along the west slopes of the Cascades and Mt Hood.

Showers and winds should taper off during the day Sunday.  A shortwave ridge will build over the area Sunday night but should be short lived.  A weak upper trough will bring some very light snow to the central/north Cascades on Monday.  After that the pattern is looking fairly quiet for the rest of the week.

Previous forecast from Jan 19, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
