Weather Synopsis

Moderate to strong offshore flow peaked Wednesday night but continued on Thursday as a very deep low pressure transited the offshore waters aining for British Columbia. The consistent southerly flow aloft has helped to erode the cold air pool east of the Cascades where temperatures at low elevations hover around the freezing mark. We've seen very significant downslope warming with these gusty winds for the west slopes of the Cascades, foothills, and lowlands. With moderated air to start with, some lowland locations reached a balmy 60F during the mid-day hours!

The general weather pattern is that deep lows move into an area about 1000 miles off the PNW coastline, then travel N or NE into British Columbia. The first such deep low exits due north with a band of showers circulating around the low bringing moderate to heavy precipitation late this afternoon and overnight for the Olympics and Mt. Baker areas. Most other areas will experience light precipitation. Southerly winds peak with the transiting upper trough Thursday evening and also expect an uptick in E winds at low levels along with upslope precipitation enhancement east of the Cascade Crest. Snow levels drop with the transiting upper trough from around 4000 ft to around 3000 ft for the west slopes of the Cascades.

Much of the region may temporarily dry out as the western US ridge expands slightly into our region. But, any drying will be short-lived as the second deep low moves into the offshore waters with a leading front spreading light to moderate precipitation throughout the region by the afternoon. The front arrives Friday evening with a round of moderate to occasionally strong southerly winds. The front lingers with periods of precipitation through Saturday.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The lingering frontal system eventually fizzles as the ridge over the intermountain west expands once again into our region on Saturday evening. A third deep low moves into position offshore on Sunday. Additional rounds of precipitation arrive late Sunday through Monday on SW flow. Snow levels will fluctuate near Snoqualmie Pass level with E flow continuing throughout the period.

Previous forecast from Jan 5, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
