Scattered showers from a weak disturbance have begun to taper off this afternoon leaving us with variable cloud cover over the area. Something akin to the identical twin of the weakening and splitting frontal system that passed through on Tuesday will pass through the area tonight, with another round of light and scattered showers.
On Wednesday, a deep low pressure system well off the CA/OR border will meander closer to the coast during the day. This will have a few impacts on our mountains, one is that offshore flow/E-SE gradients will ramp up quickly during the day, becoming strong by the afternoon not just through the mountain gaps but also along ridgelines from about Stevens Pass and southward to Mt Hood, with more moderate E-SE winds elsewhere. The other is a warm frontal band extending from the deep low will begin to rotate north on Wednesday, reaching the Mt Hood area with light snow by the afternoon. Upslope light snow should start along the east slopes of the Cascades in advance of the warm front. Further west of the Cascade crest, look for increasing high clouds to extend from south to north as the day progresses and a warming trend impacting areas well west of the Cascades crest.
The warm frontal feature will lift north on Wednesday night, producing several inches of snowfall up and down the east side of the Cascades, with much lower amounts further west of the Cascade crest. E-SE winds will be cranking in the evening, and approaching extreme for areas like Crystal mountain and Snoqualmie Pass. Winds will remain strong Wednesday night and gradually start to back off during the day on Thursday. Look for scattered showers along the west slopes of the Cascades and Olympics on Thursday and diminishing but steadier snow showers along the east slopes of the Cascades. A slow warming trend will take place for all areas Wednesday night through Thursday.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The main upper level feature associated with the upper low will finally swing through Thursday night, bringing more widespread light to locally moderate rain and snow. We'll see a period of scattered showers Friday followed by a low pressure system drifting north along the coast and light warm frontal moisture over the weekend. With each wave of systems in S-SW flow, snow levels and temperatures will generally warm. This flow pattern also generally causes headaches for weather models and forecasters alike.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
