A frontal system is weakening and splitting as it runs into a strong ridge of high pressure anchored over the inland NW this afternoon. Precipitation remains offshore while high clouds stream from south to north over the area. While precipitation has remained at bay, low clouds covering the east slopes of the Cascades continue to be pulled through the major Cascade Passes and create locally breezy E-SE winds. Offshore flow and winds will weaken tonight as the front pushes into the coast. A trailing upper level feature will swing through tomorrow morning, bringing light and scattered showers to the region. Areas that saw ridgelines winds out of the E-SE, will see the direction flop around to W. We'll also see a slight warming trend tomorrow on both sides of the Cascades in the afternoon as the lower atmosphere becomes better mixed.
A similar weak frontal system will arrive Tuesday night and may bring another round of light showers. A very deep low pressure system well offshore will meander closer to our area on Wednesday. Warm frontal moisture may reach the Mt Hood region by the afternoon along with light upslope snow on the east side of the Cascades south of L. Chelan. Offshore pressure graidents and E-SE winds will begin to increase Wednesday afternoon as well, a trend that will increase Wednesday night.
445 PM Update: Slightly increased West North/Mt Baker area precipitation forecast for Tuesday and wind speeds for West North/Olympics late tonight and Tuesday morning.

Extended Weather Synopsis
As the deep low pressure system nears the coast, we'll see light snow and E-SE winds become strong and felt over a wide area. Strong S through E winds will last through Thursday. The east slopes of the Cascades south of I-90 and the Mt Hood area may see the most snow out of this system. A trailing occluded front will weaken into showers as it pushs through on Thursday. From there, we'll see a series of impulses in SW flow bring light to occasionally moderate showers to our mountains. Temperatures/snow levels look like they gradually warm through the end of the week.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
