Weather Synopsis

An upper-level trough will pass inland this afternoon and scattered snow showers currently from about Stevens Pass and south will continue to wane through Thursday evening.  For the first part of tonight, we'll see a mix of partly to mostly cloudy skies south of Snoqualmie Pass and mostly clear conditions to the north. High clouds from the next approaching system should filter in late tonight and increase tomorrow morning with cloudy conditions forecast for all areas by mid-morning Friday.

A frontal system will slowly approach the coast on Friday, spreading snow and wind over the Olympic peninsula. The heaviest snow is likeliest for the eastern and southern parts of the Olympic range, with lower amounts likely for the Hurricane Ridge area. A warm frontal feature will try to push further inland to the Cascades Friday afternoon, but it's unclear how much or if any moisture will actually arrive. What is clearer is that with high pressure over southern British Columbia and an approaching low pressure system, offshore flow and easterly winds will strengthen during the day tomorrow, especially through the Cascade Passes.  The low complex will begin to cut-off and drop-south along the Pacific coastline Friday night, but not before additional warm frontal moisture pushes over the Cascades.  Snowfall amounts generally look like except for portions of the Olympic peninsula.

We should see a drying trend on Saturday as the low pulls further south.  However, counter-clockwise flow around the low pressure system will combine forces with offshore flow to create a windy easterly pattern for many areas beginning Saturday afternoon. There will be a slight warming trend for areas well west of the Cascade crest on Saturday and a continuation of colder temperatures elsewhere.

Extended Weather Synopsis

This E-SE wind event will likely continue through at least mid-day Sunday with the strongest winds near and east of the Cascade crest from Snoqualmie Pass down to Mt. Hood.  Some light snow may rotate up from the low pressure and affect Mt Hood and the southern Washingon Cascades on Sunday. The whole system will finally shift inland Sunday night and we'll be left with light northerly flow on Monday.  While no major systems are forecast, there could be some cloud cover and light snow for the central-west and northwest Cascades.

Previous forecast from Dec 1, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
