Weather Synopsis

Our region has been unusually dry since an atmospheric river came to a close on November 7th. An approaching system will end the 2-week dry spell during the next 24 hours. Satellite imagery shows a significant mass of clouds reaching ahead of an incoming frontal boundary. A shortwave feature re-invigorates the frontal boundary and deepens the associated trough as light rain and high-elevation snow moves into NW Washington late Monday night. That precipitation intensifies into the moderate/heavy range as it spreads south and eastward during the day. Snow levels will be elevated along the west slopes of the Cascades (4000 ft around Mt. Baker and nearly 6000 ft for Mt. Hood). However, with a cold air pool remaining in place east of the Cascades and easterly flow through the mountain gaps, we expect a significant snowfall event. Winds should shift westerly with a frontal passage during the evening hours, creating a messy wintry mix near the passes and likely limiting snow totals to the 5-8" range for Snoqualmie Pass. Stevens Pass, Washington Pass, and Mt. Baker should expect 8-14" of snow and Paradise 6-10" before westerly postfrontal shower activity mostly winds down overnight. Moderate to strong ridgeline winds will shift their focus from the Mt. Baker area early Monday to the east slopes of the Cascades and Mt. Hood areas late Monday into the evening hours.

Clouds and a slight chance of an isolated rain/snow shower lingers along the west slopes of the Cascades on Wednesday with temperatures near normal for late November.

A ridge of high pressure rebounds over the region Wednesday and Thursday. Thursday looks like the best chance of a dry day with mostly sunny skies and freezing levels rising to 8500-11000 ft to the west of the Cascade Crest. A weaker cold air pool redevelops along the east slopes of the Cascades keeping the passes cooler.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Uncertainty lingers at the end of the week. Models suggest that the ridge may start to break down late Thursday night or Friday morning as a dissipating frontal system spreads precipitation from NW to SE across the region. Expect a break between systems with cooler temperatures on Saturday.

Previous forecast from Nov 21, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
