A broad and slow-moving closed low off the Washington Coastline lifts a light to moderate rain/snow northward across the Pacific Northwest on Wednesday afternoon. That band should continue to impact the region during the evening hours, particularly along the east slopes of the Cascades where low-level easterly flow should continue to enhance rain and snowfall. With 3000-4000 ft snow levels, accumulations should be limited to mid and upper elevation areas. As the band of precipitation band lifts northward, parts of the central and southern Washington Cascades should see a relative break in the action, but a secondary wave of organized moisture will begin to impact southern parts of the region in the early morning hours on Thursday. As this feature lifts northward on Thursday, low-level winds should shift from E to W as this band passes through, limiting upslope enhancement east of the Cascades to the morning hours. Slight cooling aloft will keep instability showers going after the organized band of moisture moves through.
Thursday night features some light shower activity along the west slopes of the Cascades in the morning with drying overnight as the closed low drops south of the region and forms a trough over California late Thursday night.
Expect light W or NW winds aloft on Friday with partly cloudy skies and isolated showers across the west slopes of the Cascades Friday afternoon. East of the Cascades can expect mostly sunny skies.
Snow levels don't change much during the latter part of the week, remaining cool with the upper-level trough in place. However, snow/freezing levels rise slightly on Friday afternoon.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Low clouds and a few stray showers linger Friday evening as a trough exits the region. Models indicate that some low cloud cover is likely to be trapped under a shortwave ridge transiting the area, so expect partial cloud cover near and west of the Cascade Crest Saturday morning with mainly thin high clouds by the afternoon. The ridge axis moves east of the Cascades overnight. Clouds lower Sunday morning ahead of a closed low dropping southward off the coast of British Columbia. Light rain and higher elevation snow should move into western Washington from mid-morning onward.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
