Daytime showers are starting to gain steam over the region this afternoon. Showers will peak later this afternoon and begin to wane overnight. We can expect another downright chilly mid-April night, with widespread 5000' temperatures in the teens. A developing frontal system off the California coast will lift NE into Oregon tonight. This should spread light snow to Mt Hood before daybreak, and along the southern Washington Cascades during the morning. There is high confidence that a period of east or southeast winds will occur ahead of the developing low pressure system Friday night and Saturday morning.
The cold upper level trough that has been parked over the region for the week producing unseasonably cold temperatures and snow showers, will finally begin to shift inland Saturday afternoon. This should once again spark widespread shower activity in the afternoon. However, there will be a switch to westerly winds later Saturday afternoon and evening, bringing a period of moderate west winds to the Washington Cascades south of Stevens Pass and strong west winds to the Mt Hood area. If you see a few sunbreaks Saturday morning or mid-day, don't be fooled, dark convective showers and clouds will dominate the landscape in the afternoon. Some showers may of course contain graupel and the odd lighting strike can't be ruled out.
A Puget Sound Convergence Zone may focus on the Mt Loop Hwy corridor with scattered showers elsewhere Saturday evening. An upper level ridge will begin to slide over the area later Saturday night and move inland on Sunday. This should be a dry day, but not one without caveats. Low clouds may linger along the west slopes of the Cascades, especially near and north of Snoqualmie Pass. E-SE ridgeline winds and high clouds should increase Sunday afternoon ahead of the next Pacific frontal system.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Active weather will continue next week with an incoming frontal system slowly nudging the ridge eastward Sunday night. The associated front should pass through sometime Monday afternoon or night for a period of more moderate precipitation. Snow levels will moderate on Monday before the frontal passage, with snow levels near or perhaps above some Pass levels. A cool showery pattern is likely on Tuesday.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
