High clouds have snuck under an upper level ridge this afternoon leading to partly sunny skies across the region. After a chilly start, mid-mountain temperatures have climbed to near or above freezing through 2 pm. Offshore flow has created breezy SE ridgeline winds in many locations as well.
As the upper level ridge crosses the Cascades tonight and settles over the inland NW on Thursday, we'll see those mild temperatures and high freezing levels continue overnight, peaking on Thursday with freezing levels 9000-12000' and mid-mountain max temperatures on Thursday near or above 50F. A stationary frontal boundary near the B.C. Sunshine Coast will continue to send high clouds our way this evening, but high clouds are likely to thin after midnight through the bulk of Thursday. The extent of the overnight clearing will help decide the depth of temperature inversions that form along lower/mid slopes and in valleys. The East North zone including Washington Pass will be relatively cooler than the rest of the forecast region overnight.
While Thursday will be a full-on spring day, we can expect another round of breezy S or SE ridgeline winds. An approaching frontal boundary Thursday night will spread clouds and eventually precipitation inland. We can expect strong southerly winds for the usual suspects, Mt Baker area, Hurricane Ridge and perhaps Crystal Mt late Thursday night.
During and after the frontal passage through Friday morning, showers should be unremarkable except near the Mt Baker area during the bulk of the day and then a Puget Sound Convergence zone may form along the central Cascades during the afternoon hours between the I-90 and Hwy 2 corridors. Expect moderate westerly ridgeline winds behind the front Friday. Snow levels will fall, but the coldest air will hold off for the weekend.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The associated cold upper level trough will settle over the region for the weekend, keeping snow levels at mid-winter like levels. A trailing upper level disturbance will help reinvigorate showers on Saturday and perhaps form a stronger Puget Zone Convergence zone. While shower intensity will wane for the Washington Cascades Saturday night and Sunday, Mt Hood should continue to see new snow accumulations through the end of the weekend in cool NW flow aloft. This should be a period of moderate snowfall accumulation along the west slopes of the Cascades and Mt Hood.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
