Weather Synopsis

Although a trough has exited the offshore ridge will be slow to rebound northward. The ridge should maintain a strong influence with dry weather over Oregon and southern Washington. However, the west slopes of the Washington Cascades will remain "drippy" with some very light rain/snow showers Monday night into early Tuesday for Snoqualmie Pass, the mountain loop, and Mt. Baker. Temperatures should also remain cooler in these northern areas receiving precipitation, but we only expect a dusting of snow for Mt. Baker and above Snoqualmie Pass level. The ridge of high pressure expands slightly into our region, bringing partly cloudy skies and warmer temperatures to most areas on Tuesday (although northern areas remain quite cool).

A weak shortwave feature rounding over the top of the ridge will bring another round of "drippy" very light rain/snow Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning for the Olympics and Paradise north to the Canadian border along the west slopes of the Cascades. Temperatures will be significantly warmer and snow levels much higher in the central and southern Washington Cascades, so Mt. Baker and the mountain loop will be the only areas likely to pick up an inch or two of snow.

The ridge continues to expand into the region on Wednesday, shutting off precipitation and raising snow levels to 9500-10500 ft across the region as skies clear.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The ridge of high pressure dominates the region and remains parked along the west coast of the US throughout the extended forecast period. Mountain temperatures will be well above normal with freezing levels around 11000-12000 ft. Inversions will develop most nights below 4000 ft and weaken during the days. A trough passing to our east Thursday night into Friday might bring some slightly cooler air to the North Cascades, but don't expect much in the way of cloud cover throughout the forecast period. Low-level flow may switch easterly on Friday.

Previous forecast from Feb 7, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
