Weather Synopsis

Drippy warm frontal precipitation will continue to taper down this afternoon and early evening. This first round of precipitation brought only a few inches of snow near and west of the Cascade crest, the west-side of the Olympics and Mt Hood with very light accumulations elsewhere. Snow levels have risen into the 3000-4000' range over the Washington Cascades and will more or less stay there overnight as we wait for the next system.  Snow levels are higher down in the Mt Hood region.

Very light warm frontal precipitation will linger over the northwest Cascades through the early morning hours with dry but mostly cloudy conditions expected elsewhere.  A quick moving frontal system approaching from the NW will sweep through the Cascades mid-afternoon on Friday.  This system will bring moderate snow to the Mt Baker and Olympic area beginning in the late morning hours. Areas south of Snoqualmie Pass will have to wait until the frontal passage in the afternoon for a burst of rain and snow.  Snow levels will not be particularly cold with the system, hovering in the 3000-4000' range. Look for very strong westerly winds to develop out ahead and with the frontal passage Friday afternoon.

A trailing upper level trough will quickly pass overhead Friday night with post-frontal showers heaviest in the evening. Strong westerly ridgeline winds will continue through Saturday morning. Shower activity will begin to wane later Friday evening, except where a Puget Sound Convergence Zone (PSCZ) forms in the Skagit/Snohomish/northern King County corridor. The PSCZ could deliver a nice shot of additional snow above 3000' from the Mountain Loop Hwy to Stevens Pass Friday night. Strong westerly ridgeline winds will continue through Saturday morning.

A strong upper level ridge will build offshore. Saturday will be a transition day towards milder and drier weather.  Low clouds will be slow to clear along the west slopes of the Cascades with a few drips possible between Stevens/Snoqualmie Passes in the morning. An overall clearing trend with rising freezing levels will take hold Saturday afternoon and evening.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Dry, mainly sunny and mild weather will close out the weekend.  Light east flow through the Passes will reinforce some cooler temperatures at lower elevations and there will be some passing high clouds. High freezing levels will continue through Monday morning. A fast moving frontal system will bring a quick shot of rain and snow to the Olympics and Washington Cascades Monday afternoon.

Previous forecast from Feb 3, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
