Weather Synopsis

4 PM Update: Increased Friday precipitation forecasts for West North, West Central Cascade zones.

Weak warm frontal moisture will ride up and over an upper level ridge parked off our coast through Thursday, resulting in a period of light to moderate snowfall, a slow but steady warming trend, and moderate to locally strong W-NW ridgeline winds. The first tips of the mountain precipitation gauges have begun to show up at mountain weather stations as precipitation works into the area from the NW.

Snowfall rates should increase Wednesday night, with moderate snowfall more likely for the west slopes of the Cascades, especially from Snoqualmie Pass and northward.  Snow levels will creep up slowly over the next 24 hours with the rain line rising more quickly over the Olympics and much more gradually over the Cascades. WNW ridgeline winds will be moderate to locally strong this afternoon through Thursday morning with even stronger winds developing in alpine areas.

Steady light snow will slowly decrease during the day on Thursday along the west slopes of the Cascades with cloudy conditions lingering along the east of the Cascades crest. Temperatures will continue to warm slighlty during the day on Thursday.  Storm totals of 3-10" looks likely for the west slopes of the Cascades through Thursday afternoon with lower amounts elsewhere.

We'll see a brief break in the weather Thursday night with perhaps just some light rain and snow lingering near the Canadian border. A frontal system will sweep through the region Friday afternoon with the heaviest precipitation near and north of Snoqualmie Pass along the west slopes of the Cascades. Snow levels will in the 3000-4500' range. This system will also feature winds ramping up quickly in the afternoon.

Extended Weather Synopsis

A trailing upper level shortwave will keep post-frontal showers and snowfall accumulation going through much of Friday night.  A strong ridge of high pressure will rebuild offshore on Saturday, leading to a drying trend although low-level clouds will likely stick around for much of Saturday especially along the west slopes of the Cascades.  The ridge of high pressure will take control for the latter half of the weekend with mild and dry conditions expected.

Previous forecast from Feb 2, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
