Weather Synopsis

Scattered showers over the region this afternoon will begin to ease later this evening. There won't be much break in the action as a north-south Pacific frontal system offshore approaches the coast overnight. The front should pass through the Olympics around 5 am and the Cascades 7-8 am Sunday morning bringing a brief burst of light to moderate precipitation with frontal passage. Strong to even extreme winds out ahead of the front will hit the Olympics and Mt Baker are hardest tomorrow morning but winds will increase for all areas late tonight through tomorrow.

Post-frontal showers will continue to impact the area late Sunday morning and afternoon with a stationary low pressure system offshore spinning showers inland all day. More moderate precipitation rates and snowfall totals are likely along the west slopes of the Cascades, particularly from the Canadian border to the Mountain Loop Hwy with lighter amounts further south and east. The Olympics may see a thunderstorm or two in the afternoon as they are closest to the coldest and most unstable air aloft.

The upper low will begin to drift south along the Pacific coast Sunday night. As the low moves away, showers should come to an end by Monday morning. We'll be in a cool pattern Monday with a few afternoon showers likely over the Mt Hood area and the south Washington Cascades and afternoon cloud buildup elsewhere.

250 Update - corrected Crystal Mt precipitation forecast for tonight.

Extended Weather Synopsis

A pattern of afternoon showers and clouds should dissipate each evening and then return the next day through Wednesday.  Mt Hood may be in for a few more surprises in this pattern closest to the upper low as it becomes an open trough and shifts inland this week.

Previous forecast from Mar 6, 2021

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
