Weather Synopsis

An upper-level shortwave has spread high-level clouds over the region this afternoon. There's a bit of clearing off the Washington coast behind the upper level feature as we wait for the slow roller frontal system that's pegged to reach Mt Hood and the Olympics by daybreak. Cool offshore flow will extend to Cascade crest level in the form of moderate to locally strong E-SE winds from about Stevens Pass down to Mt Hood this afternoon and overnight. Low clouds along the eastern flank of the Cascades along with SE winds should create light upslope snowfall along the east slopes of the Cascades and in the Cascade Passes overnight. Only light accumulations are expected overnight.

The front will lift through the Cascades just before mid-day with generally 0.15-0.50" of water expected across the region. While there will be a wind shift to westerlies behind the front in the afternoon, there shouldn't be too much snow level oscillation during the day. Showers will taper quickly as an upper-level ridge builds in during the afternoon. Weak convergence may impact the Stevens-Snoqualmie corridor into the early evening hours on Friday.

Strong upper-level ridging will build over the region Friday night and Saturday with dry conditions place. Strong offshore flow will keep conditions breezy in the Passes.  Freezing levels will stay on the cool side region-wide except for the Olympics on Saturday.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The next frontal system to extend from the parent upper level low off the Aleutian Islands will pass through Saturday night and Sunday.  This system also looks to be on the weaker side with decreasing precipitation amounts toward the Oregon border. Forecast models disagree on the timing of the next system, whether it's Monday or Tuesday but it looks wetter with the jet stream shifting slightly southward into our area.

Previous forecast from Jan 7, 2021

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
