A warm and very wet system tapping into a subtropical moisture feed will unload on the Pacific Northwest Saturday night. A warm front lifted across northern Washington Saturday evening with heavy rain and snow associated with an extended cold-frontal rainband moving into the region from the west. Expect very heavy rain and snow with snow levels spiking in all areas during the evening hours and peaking in the 5000-8000 ft range overnight. The cold front works through the region overnight from NW to SE and lingers longer over the southern Washington Cascades and Mt. Hood regions. We expect 1-3"+ of water equivalent overnight.
Sunday will bring cooler weather to Washington state, with decreasing light rain and snow showers. Rain and snow will focus on Mt. Hood and Oregon where the frontal band stalls, maintaining very mild conditions and strong winds.
A wave develops a surface low on Sunday with a track aiming it directly at Washington State from the WSW in the latest model runs. With a strong warm front lifting northward over the region and E flow ahead of the front Sunday night, expect significant upslope flow and accumulation of rain and snow on the E side of the Cascades and Olympics. The cold front behind that follows is quite strong with a significant temperature gradient and wind direction shift. A more southerly track will result in a significant snow event for parts of the Cascades and Olympics, while a more northerly track will keep our region in the warm sector significantly longer. Either way, the cold front should pass the Cascades during the mid-day hours on Monday, allowing snow levels to drop and a period of intense post-frontal NW flow Monday afternoon.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Post-frontal W flow Monday evening along with a sharp, cold trough will allow significant snow accumulations for the Cascades. Overnight on Monday, the trough slides E and a significant ridge will begin moving into the region, resulting in drying northerly flow aloft and rapidly dwindling snow shower and convergence zone activity. Expect some low cloud to linger along the west slopes of the Cascades Tuesday, but partly skies will return to the region after a long hiatus. Expect a calm, clear Tuesday night. Wednesday should be mostly sunny with the ridge axis over our region and E flow developing as a system slated to arrive Friday begins to approach.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
