A closed upper low exits to our east Friday night, bringing one final band of moderate to heavy snow to the Mt. Hood area and light snow to the southern Washington Cascades. With northerly flow aloft, expect a chilly night under mostly clearing skies in many areas after midnight, followed by mostly sunny skies Saturday morning. A shortwave ridge gives our region a dry Saturday which could prove to be our last dry day for some time. Increasing easterly flow keeps the passes cool while southerly flow brings in milder air aloft throughout the day on Saturday into Saturday night, primarily west of the Cascade crest. Clouds increase Saturday afternoon ahead of a well-defined frontal system attached to a deep Aleutian Low.
The front arrives late Saturday night with the GFS bringing it in several hours sooner than the European model. Water numbers here show the later-arriving model solution with more precipitation shifted into the Sunday time blocks. Precipitation should start as rain for Hurricane Ridge and possibly a rain-snow mix for Mt Hood and Paradise before quickly changing to all snow behind the front. The major Cascade passes are likely to remain all snow with decreasing easterly flow into Sunday. Cool, unstable SW post-frontal flow on Sunday should keep light to moderate snow or snow showers in the forecast through Sunday. The flow pattern should favor the volcanoes with Mt Hood and Paradise expecting over a foot of snow by late Sunday and less than 6" expected at the Cascade passes.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The cool, post-frontal trough trailing Saturday night's front flattens slightly as it arrives Sunday night. Light W flow will bring decreasing light snow showers and potentially weak convergence to the west slopes of the Cascades. Snow flurries taper on Monday as a weak ridge builds into the region with sunshine likely for the east slopes of the Cascades. East flow increasing through the passes Monday night as a strong front approaches the coastline and then arrives on Tuesday. Although the system looks slightly milder, with the cool air in place and easterly flow, pass level and above may experience primarily snowfall...we will have to monitor.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
