Weather Synopsis for Friday night through Monday

A negatively tilted frontal band extending from a low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska continues to slowly approach the Cascades this afternoon. Precipitation has reached the Olympics and Mt. Hood at 2 pm.

The front will weaken as it passes through the Cascades this evening with pretty unimpressive precipitation totals expected overnight. Showers should diminish quickly after midnight. The one exception will the Mt. Baker area where a modest half inch of water or so is expected overnight in post-frontal showers. Generally light snowfall accumulations are expected above 4000-4500 ft. The front will usher in much cooler air and we should see widespread temperatures below freezing for the first time in over a week.

Weak longwave troughing will remain over the area Saturday along with onshore (westerly flow) at the surface. This should translate to slowly building cumulus in the afternoon with a chance of showers mainly for the Cascade Passes, west slopes and Olympics and a bit more sun for the east slopes of the Cascades.

The longwave trough passes inland on Sunday. This should again allow for an afternoon increase in cloud cover with daytime heating with the best chance for showers closer to the trough over the Washington Pass area. Freezing levels will rebound somewhat on Sunday.

Extended Weather Synopsis for Monday night through Monday

After a dry Sunday night, a stacked and closed upper low well offshore will rotate a frontal band up from the south spreading light to moderate precipitation over the area Monday afternoon. The European model has consistently shown slower timing, with the bulk of the precipitation not arriving until late afternoon or evening.  Leftover showers will diminish Monday night. Weak upper level troughing over the area on Tuesday will allow for scattered showers and a fair bit of cloud cover.
