Weather Synopsis for Thursday & Wednesday

A cold closed upper trough slides down Vancouver Island on Thursday bringing unseasonably cold early March weather. A band of light to moderate snow producing light snow in the lowlands will move through the central and north Cascades throughout the morning. Squally snow showers producing brief periods of heavier snowfall activity will increase during the afternoon and evening hours in many mountain locations. WSW flow peaks during the morning hours and gradually decreases later in the day, becoming westerly overnight enhancing orographic activity in the Cascades. As the upper-level trough moves onshore during the evening hours it should enhance snow shower activity with convergence likely developing. Snow levels should remain near sea-level Thursday morning with a slight diurnal increase in snow level by the afternoon and cooling overnight.

Snow shower activity will decrease late Thursday night into Friday morning as the upper trough shifts east of the Cascades, bringing a drying upper-level NNE flow while low-level flow remains light westerly, keeping moisture, clouds, and flurries banked against the west slopes of the Cascades on Friday with the east slopes generally drying out. Snow levels will once again rise above sea-level with diurnal warming, peaking between 500 and 1500 ft.
