Weather Synopsis for Saturday & Monday

A fine weekend is in store for the Pacific Northwest with a fair helping of sunshine and rising freezing levels. Upper level ridging over eastern Washington/Oregon will slowly slide east today. A pair of weak upper level shortwaves embedded in SW flow aloft will traverse across Mt. Hood and the south Cascades late this afternoon and tonight. This may bring a stray shower, but most likely just result in an increase in high clouds over the area.

Upper level ridging will further amplify as it retrogrades over the western US on Sunday. This will allow freezing levels to climb further. Offshore flow may create some local temperature inversions in the Cascades Passes today and tomorrow but overall easterly flow is not expected to have a large impact on temperatures/freezing levels.

Dry and mild weather will continue Sunday night, but offshore flow will increase as a weak N-S oriented frontal boundary approaches 130W.

Extended Weather Synopsis for Monday night through Monday

Monday should be the warmest day of this dry stretch as the ridge amplifies inland with freezing levels generally in the 8000-10000 ft range. However, the approaching Pacific frontal system will ramp up offshore flow, with E-SE winds increasing at crest level and through the Passes, especially from Snoqualmie Pass to Mt. Hood, including the Crystal/Mt. Rainier/White Pass areas.

The front will slow as it approaches the coast Monday night with increasing cloud cover.  A secondary shortwave trough will finally push the frontal boundary through Tuesday, with cooler air slowly filtering into the region Tuesday night. The large upper low complex will still be centered offshore, and the cooler air mass plus mid-March heating will help keep a chance of mountain showers in the forecast.
