Weather Synopsis for Thursday & Thursday

It may look dreary and grey outside the office in Seattle under an inversion, but what a spectacular day in the mountains. NWAC stations this afternoon are reporting widespread 40s and 50s with little wind and lots of mid-January sunshine.  Mountain temperatures should be similar to today or even a few degrees warmer on Friday.

The persistent upper level ridge seen for much of this winter will continue to dominant our weather through the next several days.  The ridge is currently located inside of 130W just offshore and will slowly shift inland over the next 2 days. Freezing levels should remain quite high; in the 10 to 12 thousand foot range from the north Cascades down to Mt. Hood. Light to moderate easterly flow through the Cascade passes will locally keep the Cascade passes a bit chillier.

Extended Weather Synopsis for Thursday night through Thursday

A weak front will approach the coast on Saturday...temporarily flattening the upper level ridge.  This should allow some mid and high clouds to push over the Olympics and later in the day into the central and north Cascades Saturday evening.  The front looks to lift into the central B.C. coast on Saturday with only a slight chance of light precipitation for the Olympics and N Cascades.  A secondary upper level feature on Sunday should only increase the amount of cloud cover along the west slopes...but right now does not look like it will squeeze out any measurable precipitation.  Freezing levels should dip as well Saturday afternoon through Sunday.  The upper level ridge should rebuild along the West Coast on Monday...along with a return to mostly clear skies and rising freezing levels.
