On this day, Thursday, near Cowlitz Rock, the surface was generally extremely hard and only softened in most south-facing terrain out of any wind. The surface varied from hard, find-grained recent refrozen snow to ice-glazed surfaces where wind had not allowed that recent snow to accumulate. The ice-glaze did not even allow edge penetration where frozen. Either surface will be very poor for bonding unless new snow begins as rain.
Significant furrows are found on some slopes, but not others. Limited obs indicate the surface where out of the sun may, in places, not be rock hard, but still very firm. Booting is possible in those places.
