Observed crown off of Chikamin Ridge above Cooper River. We also heard 4-5 other very loud releases though we did not see the slides due to low visibility and heavy tree coverage.

We traveled BTL on SW aspect in old growth forest. The crust was very prevalent with only a few inches of recent snow up to 3800'. From there to our highest point of 4800' the travel was much more amenable with more snow and limited sluffing except on steeper slopes. A quick hand pit at 4800' revealed snow breaking on the mid Jan crust. The break was not planar. We also checked the snow depth to be 190 cm at 4800'
