Signs of Unstable Snow

None reported

Observations

Weather: bluebird and slight westerly winds

Widespread surface hoar (3mm or larger). Abundant active wind transport of surface hoar. Seemed like lots of areas had surface hoar grow and blow away only to be replaced by more surface hoar! Lots of remnants of slides from the 1/12 storm. Some reasonably crowns were over 12”.

Pit test resulted in deep planar failures on 21 and 28. As has been the case lately, does not seem likely that one would set off an avalanche but if you did manage to trigger something it would most likely have catastrophic consequences.

Media

~12” crown on ENE aspect. Probably slid during 1/12 storm system.
