Signs of Unstable Snow

Observations

Between 6:15 and 7am this morning while breaking trail up the lower fan of Dogleg Couloir I dug approximately a dozen hasty pits to check cohesion of new snow over the last couple days. Every hand shear test easily failed anywhere from 20 to 35 cm on top of a consistent 2cm hoarfrost layer from Monday and Tuesday’s cold high pressure. Chose to pull the skins 30m below the choke where it steepens from 32 degrees to 38 Liquors rate of fall line. Last kick turn it took three stops to propagate a 4 m crack down to the 2cm hoar layer
