Observations

We experienced periodic cracking and whumpfing while skiing low elevation slopes north of Winthrop. We were primarily on the eastern aspects Owl Mountain, just north-east of Lewis Butte (elevation ~3500). Using a brief shovel test, we observed a weak layer at the base of the snowpack, buried by a foot of fresh snow and a thin crust.
