Signs of Unstable Snow

Observations

In the Grace Lakes zone we dug on a 13 deg WNW slope at 4800. Most significant result was an ECTP 28 down 65cm on 9/13 surface hoar (10mm, slightly rounding). On this low angle slope the block did not displace but made a subtle drop. On moving the block it felt like it was on roller skates. Surface hoar was 7cm above the 12/9 crust. Surface hoar was 4 finger and there was 1 finger plus snow between surface hoar and crust. Did not examine crust for small facets. Height of snow was 170cm. 12/9 crust @ 97cm and 12/13 surface hoar @ 104cm.
