Signs of Unstable Snow

Observations

Above 6,000' ridges are wind-scoured with drifts of wind transported snow. Valleys and lee slopes all wind-transported snow. Slopes have wind slabs typically 25 cm deep on top of an ice layer. On a South slope at 7800' there were hard ice layers at 25, 100, and 150 cm with dry firm snow between the layers. In many places on Friday wind was scouring snow and exposing the top ice layer (see photo).
