We wanted to avoid the wind on a ridge and briefly stepped into the leeward south side of the ridge. Hadn't previously observed any shooting cracks in lower elevation terrain and the whole ridge up. Began traversing the steep face (staying close to ridge) and a shooting crack between us formed above our feet, moving the layer of snow under us slightly, as if it were to give away to an avalanche at any moment but it never slid (that we saw). There was a thick crust layer under 4-5 inches of lighter snow.
