On a SE aspect below the Bear Gap ridge, experienced a thin layer recent snow over a crust that was supportable for skiing or skinning but not for booting. At around 5800’, the layer would break up and slide off. Skiing didn’t cause the same behavior higher up (6200’ down to 5800’), but skinning back up was unpleasant enough that we switched to booting (sinking in to roughly boot-top depth).
Skiing on N aspects on the other side of the ridge was enjoyable with some variable snow (and obvious wind action) close to the ridge tops.
