Climbed and skied Leutholds couloir today and on my way up found isolated pockets of 2-4” thick storm slab sat on top of 2-4” of facets above a 1mm surface hoar layer. Also found isolated pockets of unreactive 4-8” wind slabs.
Around 1:45 pm winds shifted and began coming from the NE, producing significant wind loading in Leutholds couloir and on the Reid glacier headwall. The 4-8” slabs became 12-18” thick and highly reactive (see photos).
Three D1.5/2 slides came down off of the Reid glacier headwall, the largest running approximately 750 vertical feet to the toe of the Reid glacier. Don’t let the distorted photos fool you, these are large enough to bury a human.
