Observations

My friend and I were surprised how little snow there was on Tumtum Peak today; we carried snowshoes, but didn’t need them at all. Traction was a must coming down (we both had microspikes). I would have liked having something with anti-balling plates though since the snow was incredibly gloppy/wet loose-ish. The snow was <2” on average, with very sporadic areas deeper than 6”-1’ (tops). Boot pen was 4” max when descending. Perfect for heel plunging. Didn’t get great views of the surrounding mountains (clouds, trees obstructing view), but Mount Wow looked pretty snow covered on the southeast aspect and definitely on the west aspect of the summit ridge.

Media

Snow on the way up the east ridge over 4.2k’.
Snow coverage near summit was pretty lean.
Example heel plunge near 4.4k’.
