Observed Avalanches

Did you observe any avalanches?
Yes
Avalanche Type:
Soft Slab
Size:
Size 1: Relatively harmless to people
Elevation:
6700
Aspect:
Comments:
Soft slab released skiiers right of the skin track up panorama face (skiier-triggered) ~ 4” crown. Skiier went left to avoid the running snow. Maybe 10 feet wide, and ran just under 100 feet. See pictures.

Signs of Unstable Snow

None reported

Observations

Throughout the day we observed snow sluffing in chunks while cutting the skin track. It didn’t gain momentum and slide beyond the couple inches from skiiers. Our party (Mt. Rainier Nordic Patrol) did not trigger any avalanches, but talked to 3 park visitors who did. Two reported wind slabs not far above pan point. Unfortunately visibility was low and light was flat, so they weren’t sure of the size.
The remaining visitor triggered a small wind slab skiiers right of the skin track up pan face (reported in observed avy details).
