Triggered Avalanches

Did you trigger any avalanches?
Yes
Was it intentional?
No
Avalanche Type:
Soft Slab
Size:
Size 1: Relatively harmless to people
Elevation:
5500
Aspect:
N
Comments:
Triggered multiple small D1 avalanches on rollovers in the low 30 degrees. Moderate propagation, not usually the entire slope but often 20-50 ft. Did not run very far because the terrain always eased up. All slid about 16 inches down on a layer of facets. Snow was very reactive even far below ridgeline, but only in the more open spots.

Signs of Unstable Snow

Did you see shooting cracks?
Yes, Widespread
Did you experience collapsing or whumpfing?
No

Observations

Many small slides triggered by us and other groups. Shooting cracks while skinning. Interestingly, similar slopes did not slide where skiers had skied the day before. All slides occurred in completely untracked terrain. Heard from another party that they did not find the same reactivity on west aspects.
