Triggered Avalanches

Did you trigger any avalanches?
Yes
Was it intentional?
No
Avalanche Type:
Soft Slab
Size:
Size 1: Relatively harmless to people
Elevation:
4100
Aspect:
N
Comments:
D1 (D0.8?) avalanche triggered at approximately 4100 ft in the source lake zone, at treeline in wind protected area. Start zone 40+ deg. Broader slope 35+ deg. Snow was soft storm slab, not wind affected. 5m x 5m zone broke aproximately 15-20 cm down to Christmas crust. Avalanche was triggered when skier dropped over small cliff band (2 m of vertical drop) and impacted small start zone for this D1. Skiier also caught tip on buried rock/root and fell on top of slide, sliding about 3-5m downhill on top of moving snow before gently coming to rest. No rescue/no burial/no injury. Local, short (2-4m) running sluffs also observed on steeper drop-ins in windprotected areas.

Signs of Unstable Snow

None reported

Observations

Large (1-1.5m diameter), deep (entirety of snowpack, to rock) holes were also observed in the middle of some of the common runouts. Early season hazards are absolutely still present.

Also see comments on D1 size break triggered above.
