Signs of Unstable Snow

None reported

Observations

Went looking for the weak layer below tree line. Dug a pit at about 4700'. below the Timberline Ski Area. In the trees the surface layer of snow was filled with refrozen evidence of a previous day's tree bombs. In clearings, BTL some decent skiing with a nice small accumulation of fresh snow on top of a supportive snow pack . Ski penetration of an 2-3 inches and boot penetration of only 4-6 inches .

Dug a pit down to the ground and found snow height approx 75cm. Found the obvious layer of weak snow about 25 cm down. Was able to easily pull out snow from the weak layer and mostly came out as crusty lumps rather than loose individual grains.

Once up at Timberline and up above the lodge - heavy westerly winds.
